Making buildings energy efficient and delivering all energy with renewable technologies.

The Zero Carbon principle is about making the buildings we live and work in more energy efficient and carbon neutral. It is using the energy hierarchy to coordinate activity that will reduce energy demand in buildings, use energy efficiently and to power and heat our buildings using a combination of on and off site renewable energy, using fossil fuels only as back up.

Making new buildings energy efficient and carbon-free is the low-hanging fruit – 87% of existing buildings will still be here in 2050, and in Brighton and Hove we have a high proportion of pre-war properties which are traditionally considered the hardest to treat. Zero-Carbon means finding solutions to these challenges, by retrofitting our properties, adopting green-engineering approaches, and ultimately developing a new type of National Grid.
