Sustainable Transport - Public Submissions
Reducing the need to travel, and encouraging low and zero carbon modes of transport to reduce emissions.
Emissions from transport make up a third of a British person’s footprint, with car use and air travel being both popular yet polluting forms of transportation. The One Planet vision is one where it is easy for people to walk and cycle and low and zero-carbon modes are provided.
This means a shift in thinking from the top-down and the bottom-up. Cities and towns need to be planned to facilitate and prioritise walking and cycling. Homes should be built with easy to access cycle storage, where people don’t have to walk past their car every time they leave their house. Places must be better connected with cheap, clean, decent public transport. And a shift in culture is needed where the motor car is not the default mode of transport, but rather the last resort – and where car-clubs, electric vehicles and those run on alternative fuels satisfy this demand.
