FotoDocument, in partnership with Southern Railway, launches its inaugural series of
photo essays highlighting positive solutions to environmental issues. The exhibitions will
run from 10th May at Brighton mainline station, as part of the Brighton Fringe, and will
continue on a rolling programme for one year. They will be displayed on 40 large panels
along the 70 metre east wall of the station.

FotoDocument is a unique Brighton-based arts education social enterprise, founded by
photographers Nina Emett and Howard Davies, to showcase world-class documentary
photography, which they believe has the power to provoke thought and initiate change.

The first exhibitions run from May through July 2012 and feature photographers Murray
Ballard and Markel Redondo whose projects focus on renewable energy in the UK and
Spain respectively.

Murray Ballard, a Brighton-based photographer and graduate from the University of
Brighton’s Photography BA (hons) course, documents renewable technologies currently
being developed in the UK. Ballard’s unique style, using large format photography,
complements the steely engineering processes of these new technologies.

Markel Redondo is a Spanish photographer with a long-standing interest in
environmental issues. Spain is a world leader in solar power technology and accounts for
40% of the world’s solar installations. Redondo’s photo essay maps the solar industry
in Spain, including large-scale desert solar plants, the manufacturing processes of
photovoltaic components as well as small-scale solar initiatives.

Alongside the exhibitions, FotoDocument will run an education programme and a global
online Fringe project where the public can share their photographs highlighting positive
environmental initiatives where they live or work.

FotoDocument has received support from UnLtd, Arts Council England and Brighton and
Hove City Council.

‘FotoDocument have a unique way of working, combining a positive solutions-based approach with world-class photography designed to really engage viewers. Their dynamic and creative new ways of story-telling are both educational and inspirational.’

Thurstan Crockett, Head of Sustainability & Environmental Policy, Brighton & Hove City Council.
